چکیده

We describe the technique of absorption line imaging of galaxy disks using the Taurus Tunable Filter on the Anglo-Australian Telescope and demonstrate its sensitivity to the behaviour of spectral features associated with Mg and Fe. Radial profiles of Mg2 and Fe5270 line-strengths are presented for a sample of eight face-on spiral galaxies spanning a range of Hubble types. Signatures of phenomena including merger-induced star formation, H  rings and galactic bars are also reported. This study demonstrates the capacity of tunable filters to measure Mg and Fe line-strengths across the face of spiral galaxies, which can ultimately reveal clues about the star formation history and chemical evolution.

The Stellar Populations of Spiral Disks.ii. Measuring and Modeling the Radial Distribution of Absorption Spectral Indices

The radial distributions of the Mg2 and Fe5270 Lick spectral indices have been measured to large radial distances on the disks of NGC 4303 and NGC 4535 using an imaging technique based on interference filters. These data, added to those of NGC 4321 previously published in Paper I of this series are used to constraint chemical (multiphase) evolutionary models for these galaxies. Because the inte...

Evidence for Recent Accretion in Nearby Galaxies

I discuss observations of magnitude residuals from the B-band Tully-Fisher relationship, B V color, chemical abundance gradients, and asymmetries in the H I and stellar disks of nearby spiral galaxies within the context of a model in which small satellites or H I clouds are accreted onto the outer disks of spiral galaxies. Correlations between the various observables support the hypothesis that...

Models of the long-term evolution of the Galactic disk with viscous flows and gas infall

Radial gas flows induced by viscosity may significantly redistribute the gas component in galactic disks. On the condition that the timescale of the viscous transport is comparable to the star formation timescale, this process naturally explains the observed exponential stellar density profiles in disks independent of the density profiles of the initial disks. We discuss models for the chemical...

Abundance gradients in the outer galactic disk from planetary nebulae

Radial abundance gradients of the element ratios O/H, Ne/H, S/H, and Ar/H are determined on the basis of a sample of disk planetary nebulae. The behaviour of the gradients at large distances from the galactic centre, R > R0 = 7.6 kpc, is emphasized. It is concluded that the derived gradients are consistent with an approximately constant slope in the inner parts of the Galaxy, and some flattenin...

N/O-trends in Late-Type Galaxies: AGB-stars, IMFs, Abundance Gradients and the Origin of Nitrogen

Models of galactic chemical evolution (CEMs) show that the shape of the stellar initial mass function (IMF) and other assumptions regarding star formation affect the resultant abundance gradients in models of late-type galaxies. Furthermore, intermediate mass (IM) stars undeniably play an important role in the buildup of nitrogen abundances in galaxies. Here I specifically discuss the nitrogen ...
